BFG Rescue came about for two reasons. Firstly, Rogeiro, our Portuguese rescue dog. Secondly, the rescue of 80 dogs from a perrera in Spain, coordinated by Galgos del Sol.
The idea of starting BFG was something we had considered for some time, but never moved forward with until we heard about the 80 large-breed dogs needing evacuation from a Spanish perrera. That became the trigger for us to take the step into rescue and start BFG. We are not new to rescue work, having been involved for many years through our other businesses in pet transport and boarding.
The dogs from the perrera had to be removed quickly due to the closure of the municipal kennels. Any dogs left behind would have been euthanised. Galgos del Sol put out a call for help, and the videos they posted made our decision easy. We initially looked at taking just two dogs, but this quickly became seven, as it was clear that getting all 80 out wasn’t going to be easy.
So, BFG Rescue is now in full swing. We have secured a second field at Lower Hey Farm for the rescue dogs to enjoy outdoor time. Our indoor area is almost complete, apart from some painting, so we’re ready for the big day.

For time-sensitive shipments across the globe, our international air freight services offer the speed and reliability you need. With a global network of airline partners and strategically located hubs, we ensure your cargo reaches its destination swiftly and securely.
Rogeiro was found by a British tourist whilst out walking one day. She described a very forlorn looking thin dog bearing a heavy chain with a metre or so length tied to a tree. His companion a small white dog tied up next to him. Desperately underweight and scorch marks from the hot sun on his ears and elbows.
She went back the next day to feed them and very quickly fell in love with Rogeiro’s gentle face. Lisa and her local friends fundraised and barained with the land owner to secure their safety, but sadly during this time the little dog, his companion passed away.
After much negotiating Rogeiro’s ticket to freedom was secured. He then spent a month in a Veterinary kennels, with IV fluids and rehabilitation care. By this time we had agreed to transport him, and so decided to take him in as a foster to assess for rehoming.
Well, he slept for days!
He quickly settled into life, taking everything in his stride. He is a dog that simply craves human connection. He is the first at the gate to meet and greet people. You can have a laugh and a joke with him. He is a regular face in our local pub.
Yet in rescue, so often is the case, these beautiful big friendly giants get overlooked, left behind to spend their days in isolation, locked in kennels with no future.
